Cape Cod 2001 had a wide variety of acts for all to enjoy. Held at Otis Air Force Base, home of several F-15 Units as well as the Coast Guard. As usual the weather did not agree, however it did not rain completely. By far the Kansas Air National Guard B-1 stole the show. We all wish Ken High a fast and speedy recovery, and look forward to photographing him soon.
The F/A-18-F Super Hornet made a small appearance on Sunday. This was one of the first flying displays that New England has seen. This aircraft belongs to VX-9 Vampires NAWS China Lake in southern California.
Any airshow would not be complete without the appearance of the F-117 Stealth Fighter. Unlike most airshow sites, Otis had one on hand. This aircraft belongs to the 8th FS, the Black Sheep based at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico.
One of the most recognized names on the airshow circuit. The great Patty Wagstaff made an appearance this year at Otis. Patty flies the Extra 300S which has a max G load of +/- 10.
Otis is home to the 102nd FS the Eagle Keepers. Flying the F-15 A/B they are one of the few units assigned the task of keeping watch for any incoming enemy aircraft over the Atlantic.
By far one of the greatest displays of power the Kansas Air National Guard shook the ground in Cape Cod. McConnell AFB is home to the 184th BW and one of the few B-1B bases in the US.
On the way to Cape Cod I pass by Westfield Mass. Home to 104th FW the Death Vipers. The A-10 and O/A-10 is by far one of the greatest assets to the Air Force arsenal. Its main weapon is the 30 mm GAU-8/A seven-barrel Gatling gun. The Gatling gun has the ability to fire 3,900 rounds per minute. Due to the declining visibility they kept the demo away from the crowd.
No airshow would not be complete without the Warbird review. The 2001 Cape Cod Airshow had the P-51 Mustang, the B-17 Flying Fortress, and a rare appearance of the Collings Foudation F-4 Phantom II
Ken High and his super fast SUV had a slight problem. Only one parachute opened causing the truck to flip several times. Thankfully, Ken is OK and hopefully will be returning to the airshow circuit ASAP. Get well soon Ken!
One of my favorite shots of the 2001 season. The UH-1 Huey and the UH-60 Blackhawk in the background. Landing just after performing a simulated water drop.
The performers of the day - The United States Air Force Thunderbirds. Due to visibility the Thunderbirds were only able to due a few passes with the Diamond.
