When the Blues come to town you can bet the Marine Corps C-130 nicknamed Fat Albert is already on the scene. Fat Albert is currently the only Marine Corp aircraft permanently assigned to a Navy Squadron for Support. An all Marine Corp crew of three pilots and five enlisted personnel fly and maintain Fat Albert.
Fat Albert transports the squadrons equipment and personnel to all show sites. At selected show sites Fat Albert performs the Jet Assisted Take-Off (J.A.T.O.). Eight solid rocket boosters are attached to the sides of the C-130, four on each side. Besides making the crowd go wild it does serve an important purpose, it does have an important use. The rockets allow the C-130 to take off within 1,500 feet, climb at a 45-degree angle, and attain 1,000 feet in minimal time.
